Artist Quoc Hung – From the Traditional Tuong Co Stage to Children’s Laughter in The Music Garden.

  1. Artist Quoc Hung – From the Traditional Tuong Co Stage to Children’s Laughter in The Music Garden.

In the vibrant and colorful setting of Vuon Am Nhac (The Music Garden), a children’s program produced by the Ho Chi Minh City Television Station, artist Quoc Hung—widely known for his work in traditional cai luong tuong co—once again surprises audiences with his portrayal of an eccentric professor in the play Nong Trai Vui Ve (The Happy Farm). Beyond bringing laughter, his performance also inspires young viewers to reflect on nature, science, and compassion through his charming and distinctive stage presence.

A Fascinating Shift from Tuong Co to Children’s Theater

Nguyen Quoc Hung, professionally known as Quoc Hung, is a seasoned performer in the traditional cai luong tuong co genre. Renowned for his roles as antagonists, elders, and comic characters, he has made a lasting impression on traditional theater audiences through numerous standout performances on professional stages.

Yet, few people know that alongside his shimmering career in tuong co, Quoc Hung has taken a sincere turn into the world of children’s theater. Having worked for many years with Khan Quang Do magazine, he has spent the past two years collaborating with the Children’s Department and the editorial team led by director Tran Minh Cuong to create engaging performances for children’s shows like Magical Moment and Vuon Am Nhac, taking on roles both as an actor and as a director.

When a Veteran Artist Becomes a Humble Learner

Despite his vast experience, Quoc Hung humbly considers himself “a newcomer” to spoken drama. “I rely on the atmosphere created by my fellow actors, and from there, I do my best. When there’s something I don’t understand, I ask the director, the script editor, or my co-actors,” he shared. This humility and eagerness to learn reflect the mindset of a true artist—one who listens, adapts, and constantly evolves.

One moment that touched him deeply was the wholehearted support of the production crew: from the director personally styling his character’s hair, to team members preparing costumes and props with great care, allowing him to focus entirely on his performance. Playful rehearsals with actor Cao Di, and spontaneous improvisations with child actor Phi Phung, are just some of the joyful moments that reflect the warmth and unity behind the scenes.

Preserving the Spirit of Tuong Co, Inspiring Young Hearts

Staying true to his roots, Quoc Hung continues to incorporate the essence of tuong co into his performances—especially in antagonist roles. However, unlike the fearsome depictions typical in cai luong, he intentionally softens his characters and adds a touch of comedy, so children “feel a sense of caution without fear” and “stay alert without emotional harm.”
